Surface plasmon-polariton resonances in metal-coated polycarbonate gratings
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this article a study of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is presented using a diffraction grating to couple light on the dielectric–metal interface. A polycarbonate surface relief gratings obtained from commercially available DVD-R stampers are used as substrates and are subsequently coated with silver and gold thin films (with physical thickness d = 15-25 nm) . The presence of SPR is experimentally verified by the observed resonance peaks in spectral transmittance of TM polarized light. Furthermore, the spectral positions of these peaks are determined for the given film thickness – 510 nm for the Ag layer and 760 nm for the Au layer. The results are compared with previous study of SPR peaks in aluminum thin films.

We performed numerical investigations of surface plasmon excitation and propagation in structures made of a photochromic polymer layer deposited over a metal surface using the finite-difference time-domain method. We investigated the process of light coupling into surface plasmon polariton excitation using surface relief gratings formed on the top of a polymer layer and compared it with the cou...

Rayleigh anomalies (RAs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on subwavelength metallic gratings play pivotal roles in many interesting phenomena such as extraordinary optical transmission. In this work, we present a theoretical analysis of the effect of finite metallic grating size on RA-SPP resonances based on the combination of rigorous coupled wave analysis and finite aperture diffraction....
متن کاملDouble - period zero - order metal gratings as effective selective absorbers
The electromagnetic response of a zero-order metal grating having a primary deep short-period component and a shallow long-period component is modeled. It is found that such a metal grating has an unusual surface-plasmon-polariton band structure and exhibits strong selective absorption of incident radiation. This opens up potential for designing metal surfaces with specific optical response fea...
متن کاملOptical stark effects in j-aggregate-metal hybrid nanostructures exhibiting a strong exciton-surface-plasmon-polariton interaction.
We report on the observation of optical Stark effects in J-aggregate-metal hybrid nanostructures exhibiting strong exciton-surface-plasmon-polariton coupling. For redshifted nonresonant excitation, pump-probe spectra show short-lived dispersive line shapes of the exciton-surface-plasmon-polariton coupled modes caused by a pump-induced Stark shift of the polariton resonances. For larger coupling...

The Green’s-theorem integral equation formulation is employed to study numerically the coupling into surface plasmon polaritons by illuminating a finite metal grating with a Gaussian beam from the vacuum half-space above the metal surface. A flat surface impedance boundary condition is used to simplify the scattering integral equations. The grating coupler period is chosen so that the first dif...
